The harmonious functioning of a beehive serves as a powerful metaphor for collective achievement. Hive marks Blue Monkey Network’s fourth group exhibition, continuing a tradition where each iteration evolves through collaboration between our core members and the local gallery network. This year, artists were invited to work without prescribed rules, resulting in an expansive collection that celebrates both individual independence and shared effort. I am delighted to exhibit here for the first time in the unique, interconnected "warren" of spaces at Gallery North, in Hailsham, East Sussex.
During World War II, barrage balloons formed defensive swarms in the sky, creating protective networks over cities. Like a hive, they operated as a collective system of sacrificial obstacles designed to defend against enemy aircraft.
Barrage Balloon II is reduced to a small, cocoon-like form. Both barrage balloons are cropped, suspended, and isolated, exploring the tension between individual vulnerability and collective strength.
